MVP Watch

At this Pre-Winter Break point in the season, the BJIM Scouts have paused to recognize the front-runners in the race for League MVP.  Unlike the All-Star named at the end of every season, the MVP award is an unofficial accolade, and will be named by the staff of BJIM Scouts.  Impact on team performance and individual play will both be taken into account.  We voted for MVP candidates in the same way that the Power Rankings were voted on. Without further ado, here are the top MVP candidates for the inagural Brebeuf Intramural Most Valuable Player Award:

Spencer Martin: JR - Ballers on Point (13 points)
Martin has been the most impressive player thus far into the season, as he has emerged (much as we thought he would) as the best player on a very talented Ballers on Point team.  He scored what we believe to be (unconfirmed) a league-high 17 points in his team's convincing victory over an over-hyped Mystical Meerkats squad.  If the BOP go on to compete for the championship, Martin's case for MVP will be quite solid indeed.

Brendan McCauly: SR - Flint Tropics (12 points)
Brendan is only one point removed from the top spot in our MVP Watch.  He may be the most talented player in the league, and is clearly the centerpiece of championship contending Flint Tropics team.  McCauly's buzzer beater in the Tropics win earlier this season is one of the top plays so far this season.  If Brendan stays hot, he, and his team, may both be taking home the hardware.

Kent Miiller: SR - The Big Dribblers (9 points)
Kent rounds out the top contenders for the MVP trophy.  He is the leader of what the BJIM Scouts have named as the league's best team, and is certainly the most talented pure point guard in Intramural basketball today.  Miiller's skill running the point will take his team far, and the Dribblers will go as he goes.  If TBD goes on to win the championship, it will be because of Kent's stellar D, facilitating of the offense, and other team's inability to keep him from getting to the rim.

Adam Iffert: SO - The Mystical Meerkats (4)
Iffert was one, if not the, favorite(s) for the award in the PreSeason, but his team's crappy play has knocked him down a notch.  The Meerkats haven't necessarily been awful, but they are 0-2 thus far into season, including an overtime loss to a team that Hayne's had ranked in the bottom five of the league.  If Iffert wants to improve his standing, it has been suggested by some that he must improve his shot selection.

Danny Shuck: SO - Sam Mohr's Team (3)
Danny's MVP candidacy at the moment is based on his stellar performance against the Mystical Meerkats.  While some find it unlikely that his name will stick as a candidate for the MVP (as he came from nowhere. Danny did not appear on our Pre-Season All-Star list), if Shuck keeps producing the way he did in his team's shocker against the Meerkats, he could take home the gold.

Jalen Brown: SR - Hamburglars (2)
No MVP Watchlist would be complete without the name of the league's most talented player.  If he gets engaged, the award is his.  Tremendous upside.

Munib Ansari: SR - The Coach's Kids (1)
One of the top-ranked players in the Pre-Season, Munib had over a dozen points but a low shooting percentage in his team's first game.  If his team suceeds, he will skyrocket up this list.

Jack Blaiklock: SR - Stone Cold Keelers (1)
Jack has been one of the least talked about top talents in the league so far, and ran the point quite effectively for his team in their route of the Coach's Kids earlier in the year.

Power Rankings (First Edition)

The BJIM Scouts will be posting Power Rankings on a monthly or bi-weekly basis.  Only the Top 5 teams will be recognized at this point.  The Top 5 is developed by our three anonymous panelists casting our own votes.  The final standings are as follows:

1. The Big Dribblers (15 pts)
The unanimous selection for top team, TBD is perhaps the most talented team in this year's considerably weaker talent pool from last year.  They are led by PreSeason All-Star Kent Miiller, who will be looking to make his case for League MVP this year.  He is clearly one of the front runners, with quick hands, top rated speed, elite ball handling skills, and the ability to finish creatively at the rim. Last years team was very competetive, and the addition of Rob Tinkle, among others, may add something to the team.  Tinkle, Chris Kahn, Joey Lopshire, and Carl Vander Kooy all add CYO basketball experience to the team.

2. Mystical Meerkats (10)
Only one vote seperated the second, third, and fourth placed teams in our power rankings.  By the skin of their teeth, the Meerkats are our pick for runner up.  A team of primarily sophomores, the Meerkats were impressive as freshmen in last years league.  Led by MVP candidate Adam Iffert, the Meerkats have a large team, which adds depth, but that could be their biggest obstacle to overcome.  Smaller teams are actually more poised for success in the Intramural circuit, because the games are short, and having a small team enables teams to keep the hot hand on the court.  If the Meerkats can overcome their crowded roster, it will be because Iffert absolutely dominates the game with help from brothers Marshall and Clay Farren, and the rest of the returning players. The team was noted to have incredibly chemistry last year, and they can only hope it carries over to this year.

3. Flint Tropics (9)
What looked like the number one team in the preseason has fallen to number three in the eyes of our panelists.  The Tropics still may boast one of the most talented rosters in the league, but they clearly have issues that will prevent them from dominating the league in the manner we once thought possible.  Brendan McAuly, Ryan Morelock, and Ryan Penny are all elite talents in this league, and have the ability to take over a game.  The Menne brothers both have height, and Pete Arnold is a smart player capable of starting on a winning team. However, an eleven man roster could take playing time away from their stars, and the Tropics may struggle to distribute minutes in crucial games.

4. Ballers on Point (8)
Every player on this roster has the potential to be an All-Star. Saying this, there are only six players listed on the roster.  And one of them, Grant Prather, is also listed on the Mystical Meerkats roster.  The team's small roster size will either be one of its greatest strengths or its biggest weaknesses.  On one hand, the Ballers will never find themselves in a situation where they are forced to play untalented players, but they also might struggle to compete if they are playing a team that is deep with talent. Myles Faulken, Spencer Martin, and Matt Lang are all poised to make a huge impact every game.

5. Hamburgulars  (2)
The 'Burgulars are loaded with talent but clouded with question marks.  Jalen Brown is perhaps the greatest talent in the league, but has yet to make a huge impact on the league, not making last year's All-Star cut.  Seth Gochanhauer is a streaky shooter with the potential to keep his team in any game if he gets hot, and Sterling Mitchell also has game changing skill.  Nate Delumpa has CYO basketball experience, and is a force inside. The question for the 'Burgulars will be if they can get enough contributions from the team as a whole.

With the breakup of the ultimate powerhouse of the Robotic Ballers, a void is left in the Brebeuf intramural universe.  This leaves multiple free agents available to rising new teams, the most notable being Jalen Brown, Sterling Mitchell, and Malik Ferguson. This big three of seniors who are now eligible for new teams leaves fans wondering. There are two possible scenarios: a new alignment of these three potential all stars, or perhaps them all going their separate ways.
Malik and Sterling have both proven to be stars. Malik has the ability to take control of the game and Sterling delivers very explosive play making ability. Jalen, however, remains a question mark. He was not necessarily a key piece of the Robotic Ballers success, but he definitely is one of the most talented players in the league. If he was in the right place, he could be a potential MVP candidate.  The Robotic Ballers leave a group of winners, play-makers and all-stars that could make the difference between a playoff run and a losing season for some teams.
PreSeason Intramural All-Star Team

This is an early projection of Brebeuf's intramural All-Star team. Two players who dominated the intramural circuit last year may be joining the Brebeuf basketball team, and therefore be ineligible for IM play, so a few honorable mention players are listed in addition to the top ten.

Who We Are

The intramural basketball scene at Brebeuf is both competetive and dramatic, but, above all else, it is truly "where amazing happens."  From the drama stirred up by Commissioner Haynes to the marquee free agent signings, to the rise and fall of intramural franchises that were once thought to be unbeatable dynasties, the Brebeuf Intramural Scouts team will be here to cover it all, from preaseason to every post-season game.  More to come as we get closer to the season.  The views expressed in this blog are not affiliated with Brebeuf Jesuit.

This years teams will all be gunning for the gold
